Thursday, March 28th: Panel Discussion
Charting Our Course: A Conversation Honoring the HBCU Reparations Movement
Join us for an insightful panel discussion delving into the landmark Knight vs. Alabama case, featuring the esteemed John F. Knight. Moderated by Mayor Randall Woodfin, the conversation will explicate the decades-long case which sought to dismantle the dual and unequal education system sustained by the state’s policies and practices.
Key consequences included increased financial investment in HBCUs, program enhancements, facility upgrades, and broader access for African American students to higher education opportunities. The Knight v. Alabama case set a precedent, affirming that the eradication of segregationist policies is imperative to the integrity of the education system and the provision of equitable opportunities for all students.
Through this exploration, we pay tribute to the plaintiffs and leaders like John Knight and other faculty and students whose brave testimonies inspired and drove educational reform and equity.
